M. CHATIB BASRI


Dr. M. Chatib Basri is Former Minister of Finance of Republic of Indonesia (May 2013-Oct. 2014) and Former Chairman of Indonesia’s Investment Coordinating Board (June 2012 - May 2013). He is also a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Economics, University Indonesia, and Research
Associate at the Institute for Economic and Social Research, Faculty of Economics University of Indonesia. He is now the member of the Asia Pacific Regional Advisory Group of the International Monetary Fund (IMF)-comprising nine prominent experts in Asia Pacific. Dr. Basri is the co-founder and Senior Partner CReco Consulting, a Jakarta based economic consulting firm established in 2010.

He was Special Advisor to the Minister of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia in 2006-2010, He served as the Sherpa to the President of the Republic of Indonesia for G-20 meeting in Washington, November 2008 and acted as a Deputy of Minister of Finance for G-20 from 2006-2009. His expertise is International Trade, Macroeconomics and Political Economy.

Since 2005 he has served as a member of Advisory Team to the Indonesian National Team on Trade Negotiation. He was also the Independent Commissioner in major public companies in Indonesia including PT Astra International, PT Semen Gresik, Tbk, PT Astra Otoparts and PT Indika Energy. From 2010-1012 Dr Basri was an Independent Non-Executive Director for Axiata Group Bhd. Dr. Basri was also a member of the Regional Advisory Board for Toyota Motor Asia Pacific.

He graduated from Faculty of Economics University of Indonesia in 1992, he then awarded a Master of Economic Development and Ph.D in Economics from Australian National University in 1996 and 2001 respectively.

He has acted as a consultant for the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the USAID, AUSAID, OECD and UNCTAD. He is the author of a number of papers in international journals and actively writes for various leading newspapers and magazines in Indonesia.

Dr. Basri was the author of number of papers, including: Ideas, Interest and Oil Price: The Political Economy of Trade Reform During Suharto's; Indonesia Trade Policy Review 2007 (both published in The World Economy), The Political Economy of Manufacturing Protection in LDCs : An Indonesia case study (Oxford Development Studies), is co-editor of the book Indonesia Business in Indonesia: New Challenges, Old Problems. Dr. Basri contributes chapters and comments in various books including International Financial Issues in the Pacific Rim (published by University of Chicago Press and National Bureau of Economic Research).
